Long-Term Resident Visa (so-called “LTR Visa”) has been recently introduced by the coordination between several governmental agencies, including without limitation to BOI, the Immigration Bureau, and the Department of Employment.
The essential privileges offered under LTR Visa are as follows:
Currently, there are 5 types of LTR Visa available:

1 | Wealthy Global Citizens | A wealthy individual who: a) holds at least USD 1 million in assets and investment in Thailand; b) earns a personal income of a minimum of USD 80,000 per year in the past 2 years; c) investment of minimum USD 500,000 in Thai government bonds or Thai property; d) and has health insurance with at least USD 50,000 coverage or social security benefits insuring treatment in Thailand or at least USD 100,000 deposit. |
2 | Wealthy Pensioners | A wealthy individual who: a) has retired; b) is 50 years or older; c) earns a personal income of a minimum of USD 80,000 per year at the time of submitting the application – in the event of the personal income below USD 80,000 per year but no less than USD 40,000 per year, the applicant must invest at least USD 250,000 in Thai government bonds or Thai property; d) and has health insurance with at least USD 50,000 coverage or social security benefits insuring treatment in Thailand or at least USD 100,000 deposit. |
3 | Work-from-Thailand Professionals | An expatriated employee who: a) earns a personal income of a minimum of USD 80,000 per year in the past 2 years – in case of personal income below USD 80,000 per year but no less than USD 40,000 per year in the past 2 years, the applicant must have a Master’s degree or above or own intellectual property or receive Series A funding; b) has worked for a well-established company overseas, i.e. a public company on a stock exchange or; c) private company in operation for at least 3 years with combined revenue at least USD 150 million in the last 3 years; d) has at least 5 years of work experience in the relevant fields of the current employment over the past 10 years; e) and has health insurance with at least USD 50,000 coverage or social security benefits insuring treatment in Thailand or at least USD 100,000 deposit |
4 | Highly Skilled Professionals | An expatriated employee who: a) is a professional or expert in targeted industries; b) earns a personal income of a minimum of USD 80,000 per year in the past 2 years – in case of personal income below USD 80,000 per year but no less than USD 40,000 per year in the past 2 years or before retirement, the applicant must have a Master’s degree or above in science and technology or special expertise relevant to the job assignment in Thailand – but no minimum personal income for professionals working for Thai government agencies; c) has worked for a business or higher education institution, research institution, specialized training institution, or Thai government agency in any targeted industries; d) At least 5 years of work experience in the targeted industries except for applicants with a PhD or above in the relevant fields of the targeted industries or applicants working for Thai government agencies; e) and has health insurance with at least USD 50,000 coverage or social security benefits insuring treatment in Thailand or at least USD 100,000 deposit |
5 | Dependents | * Only legal spouse, and children under 20 years of the LTR Visa holder (please note that Same-sex marriage or partnerships are not yet currently recognized by the law of Thailand). * Maximum 4 dependents per one LTR Visa holder. * The applicant must have health insurance with at least USD 50,000 coverage or social security benefits insuring treatment in Thailand or at least USD 25,000 deposit. |
The LTR Visa program definitely provides a long-term residential opportunity for those eligible foreign applicants to stay and work in Thailand for a minimum of 10 years with a renewable option.
